San Pedro City, Laguna is no stranger to heavy flooding during the rainy season.
And last week, heavy rains due to monsoon winds, intensified by typhoon “Carina,” once again submerged parts of the city, including Barangays San Antonio and Landayan.
In Carmen Homes in Barangay San Antonio, residents faced raging waist-deep waters after a retaining wall behind a canal broke due to heavy rains.
At least ten families inside the subdivision were temporarily housed inside the subdivision’s clubhouse, while 39 other families were evacuated in Barangay Landayan and another 16 were housed at the Rosario Evacuation Center.
Through it all, however, the city government of San Pedro under Mayor Art Mercado proved that the city is "Una sa Laguna" when it comes to disaster response.
“Lahat po ng concerned agencies ng San Pedro City LGU ay agad nating minobilize upang rumesponde sa sitwasyon, sa tulong na rin po ng mga barangay disaster risk reduction and management committees (BDRRMC),” Nico Pavino, head of the San Pedro City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), informed OpinYon Laguna in an interview.
The CDRRMO immediately dispatched crews to Carmen Homes to remedy the damage caused by the broken retaining wall, as well as cleaning up flooded streets and removing obstructions such as fallen trees.
San Pedro City Mayor Art Mercado also personally led the distribution of relief packs to affected residents in Carmen Homes, Rosario Evacuation Center, and other parts of the city last July 25.
Through this, the San Pedro LGU also received valuable assistance from various government offices in its relief efforts.
The Office of Civil Defense – Calabarzon also gave a total of 55 hygiene packs for distribution to affected residents. The provincial government of Laguna also provided relief packs to affected residents.
Mercado has extended his appreciation and gratitude to the various local government employees, as well as civic organizations, who assisted in the city's disaster response and relief efforts.
