From being the former media liaison officer of the Cataquizes in running the cityhood of San Pedro in the past to being the man behind-the-scene (BTS) honcho in the recently concluded University of Santo Tomas Philets and Artlets 60th anniversary, journalist Sonny Ordona has come a long way.
Ordona, a UST Arts and Letters 1974 alumnus, was directorial assistant and one of the major technical people in the star-studded and dazzling UST alumni homecoming dubbed “From Pen to Pixels Honoring the Past Embracing the Future” held at The Tent City of the Manila Hotel recently.
Sonny, aside from being a bro in the Phi Chi Rho Fraternity, the only recognized frat in Arts and Letters during the pre-martial law and during the martial rule era in the college, is a practicing newspaperman.
It’s no wonder, he has a solid background in mass media and live production and performances so Joel Macanaya, Ordona’s fellow Artlets and one of the members of the iconic Rainmakers, readily got him to assist in directing the fabulous show.
Being the director of the grand gala night, Joel was cool in making the reunion gig a success with Sonny around.
Aside from doing events, Ordona is also busy in his pastoral and apostolic volunteerism as a convenor and exponent in the creation of the Lolo Uweng Pilgrim Church in Landayan, San Pedro.
Meanwhile, Sonny had a grand time assisting Macanaya and Voice-Over (VO) talent Deny Munoz, ther fellow Artlets ’74 graduate.
It was fun trafficking and directing talents and sequencing of the production numbers with the special participation of most UST Artlets alumni from 1964 to 2024, Philets graduates from 1896 (when its college was known as Facultad de Filosofia y Letras) to 1964—which had an affiliated academic unit as College of Liberal Arts which was fused with the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters in 1964, hence, Artlets.
Some of the Artlets alumni’s talents who rendered their musical and other performances wizardry were Isay Alvarez, Lou Bonnevie, Isko Salvador also known as Brad Pete, Rainmakers, Bo Cerrudo, Jojo Alejar and Joey Lina.
Certified Artlets grads Ali Sotto, Mon Gualvez and Sandra Aguinaldo emceed the show.
Seen in the remarkable homecoming were sterling personalities in their chosen fields, journalists Nestor Cuartero, Julie Yap- Daz, Pacita Syquia-Almario, Beth Marcelo, Lito Zulueta, literary writer and professor Cristina Pantoja-Hidalgo, among others.
