Catbalogan City, Samar– With the observance of All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day, the Samar Provincial Police Office (SPPO) has intensified its preparations for Oplan Kaluluwa 2024 to ensure public safety throughout the UNDAS holiday weekend. Police Lieutenant Jem Henessy Fallong, Public Information Officer for the SPPO, in an interview with OpinYon 8 shared details of the security efforts designed to maintain peace and order amid heightened public activity in cemeteries, transport hubs, and other communal areas.
The initiative aligns with the directives from PNP Chief General Romel Francisco Maribel, aimed at creating a safe environment during the holidays. "Our Provincial Director, Police Colonel Antonieto Eric A. Mendoza, has directed all police chiefs across Samar to enhance security and public assistance," Fallong reported. "These measures focus on preventing crimes such as break-ins, especially as residents often leave their homes vacant during UNDAS."
In addition to reinforcing security in key areas, SPPO has deployed extra personnel to critical locations and strategic checkpoints. Improved traffic management in and around cemeteries and terminals aims to prevent congestion, with AFP, Philippine Coast Guard, and local government units (LGUs) actively coordinating to support high-footfall areas.
SPPO is also employing advanced surveillance measures, including drones and body-worn cameras, which were tested in a recent dry run to confirm readiness. “This trial ensures all operations run smoothly, enabling quick responses to any incidents,” said Fallong.
For the public, the Samar police provided guidelines for visiting cemeteries, advising adherence to set hours, safety protocols, and respectful behavior. Parents are encouraged to use identification tags for their children, and assistance booths and health centers will be available as needed.
Lt. Fallong concluded with a message for the public, encouraging vigilance, compliance with guidelines, and the reporting of any suspicious activities. "With everyone’s cooperation, we can achieve a safe and solemn UNDAS celebration," she affirmed.
