A new batch of aspiring doctors in Samar province will soon join the ranks of those who have received support through the province's pioneer medical scholarship program.

The new batch, consisting of 22 qualified scholars will be entitled to free basic tuition; allowance for prescribed books, supplies and equipment; clothing or uniform allowance; dormitory or boarding house accommodation allowance; and internship fees.

They will also receive financial assistance during the mandatory internship, medical board review fees, licensure fees, annual medical insurance, and other education-related miscellaneous subsistence or living allowances.

The new set of future doctors, who are funded by Provincial Ordinance No. 17-453-24, are expected to provide healthcare services to various installations in the province upon completing their studies and passing board examinations.

“To ensure public health human resource in Samar, scholars will be under return service once they finished their medical degree and passed the Physician Licensure Examination through employment opportunities in rural health units, district hospitals, and the provincial hospital operated by the local government. This strategy will help the provincial healthcare system under the Universal Healthcare Law,” the Samar provincial government said on Friday.

The students will enroll at Samar State University's Samar Island Institute of Medicine (SSU-SIIM) in the next school opening.

SSI-SIIM is the 20th institution in the country to receive approval for a medical degree program aligned with the goal of the “Doktor para sa Bayan” Act.

The law aims to increase the number of graduates of local medical doctors who will serve in rural areas through the Medical Scholarship and Return Service program.
