The home is supposed to be the safest refuge for everyone. But news about fire, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) blast, violent fights, and other untoward incidents recently fill the paper, being the cause of death or injuries for the people in their abodes. Fast facts on home fatalities and injuries state that 78 percent of all preventable injury-related deaths happen in the home or communities. This poses a question then: how safe is your home?

Any hazard should be regularly checked, like LPG and electrical wirings and installations.

The saying that goes, “mabuti na ang manakawan, huwag lang masunugan,” has some truths to it. Although neither is good, falling victim to a thief, according to this old saying, is lesser evil than to have your place razed by fire. But then, "careful what you wish for" is another adage. So prevent both.

Safety from burglars and violent people should always be kept in mind. Life is precious and it has to be protected at all times, either day or night. People these days can just enter anyone’s house without warning so it is the homeowner’s responsibility to shield his or her home and family from people with sinister intentions. Prevent your home from being broken into.

Accidents at home are not nil. In fact, the Philippine Statistics Authority in 2018 Integrated Survey on Labor and Employment lists “wrist and hand as the most injured part of the body, accounting to 35.9 percent. Lower extremities and arm and shoulder come next.” Falls are also common and it should not be taken lightly. Any danger is real danger. Bathroom floors need to be always dry, so place a mat to avoid slipping.

Bad things can happen anytime, anywhere, even in the most secure place called home. Safety measures are required everyday to avoid fatalities or damage that can cost a lot. Make it a habit to check hazards like it is already a part of your daily routine. Life cannot be replenished. Everybody knows it for a fact but sometimes we have to be reminded of that!
