Aside from Jericho Rosales who did an amazing job as Manuel Luis Quezon in the filmbio "Quezon," a TBA Studios production directed by Jerrold Tarog, Romnick Sarmenta as the Cebuano Sergio Osmeña was also a historical persona who gave justice to the role.
Romnick was tailor-made for the other controversial figure in the equally talked about film of the season.
Sarmenta was indeed a copycat of Serging, especially his inflection of the Visayan-Cebu accent.
It was one of the highlights of Nicko's unparalleled performance.
It seemed that he was really meant to breathe life to the most endeared politician during his time.
It was a complementary role to the overpowering characterization of Jericho in his clever portrayals of MLQ all throughout the film.
Even when they were in the Senate, Rosales and Sarmenta were contrasts that made the partnership more plausible and down-to-earth or even amusing.
What more Quezon was able to convince Osmeña to be his running mate as Vice-President in the 1935 presidential elections for the Commonwealth against Emilio Aguinaldo and his vice-president Raymundo Milleza, a former governor of Iloilo at the time.
Romnick as Osmeña provided the sidekick comic relief for Jericho as Quezon especially when they were parried as Batman and Robin or the most unique and witty Don Quijote de la Mancha and his duo Sancho Panza.
The team clicked to the audience and even to the actors and private personages as well.
They were the team to beat that has gone to its satirical performances.
It seemed that Serging was indeed an obedient or blind follower to Quezon.
Nicko delivered his most cunning interpretation to the role in his quest for political victory.
Osmena played coy not to be competitive with Quezon but the crux of the matter was his interest to overrun Manuel and to succeed him.
It was even documented that Serging was really eyeing the highest post in the land but he underplayed until he knew, of course, that Quezon was very sick at the time and would meet his eventual death.
Sarmenta's make-up and hair color were genuinely made to approximate Serging, the Pride of Cebu.
According to Nicko, it was really nice to take on the role of Osmena and his playing politics with the character.
Viva! Serging Osmena.
