Better access to educational tools. That was the key goal of the municipal government of Los Baños, Laguna as they recently launched a tablet program that will provide students with technology-enabled learning tools.

Dubbed the "Rizal Tablet," the gadget is preloaded with interactive educational content including the DepEd prescribed grade-specific Academic Recovery and Accessible Learning (ARAL Program) materials expected to enhance reading, comprehension, numerical and critical thinking.

According to Los Baños Mayor Neil Andrew Nocon, the program was inspired by the efforts of national hero Jose Rizal not only to acquire education for himself but also to awaken the minds of Filipinos in his time.

"Back then, it took Jose Rizal to awaken the minds of Filipinos under colonization. Today, we continue his legacy, led by a Rizal from Laguna,” Nocon said during the launching of the program last November 21.

An initial batch of 120 students from three public schools in the town - Maahas Elementary School, Mayondon Elementary School, and Los Baños Central Elementary School - will receive their own Rizal Tablets early next year.

Department of Education (DepEd) local officials have expressed their full support for the program, saying that it will help bridge the learning gaps among students while providing equal opportunities for all learners to succeed.

“We will utilize the program for their [learners] learning in reading, especially in mathematics, which they need to master. The literacy rate in our educational system is currently very low, but I believe that through this program, using the Rizal Tablet, it will help children learn faster and more effectively,” DepEd Los Baños Public School District Supervisor Soledad Villanueva added.

The Rizal Tablet program is part of Los Baños’ ongoing commitment to innovative education programs, which also include digital classrooms, teacher capacity-building, and community learning support initiatives.
