Across the Philippines, the working class, long considered the backbone of the nation’s economy, is increasingly slipping into a precarious reality: becoming the “new poor.”

Despite being employed, many Filipino workers now struggle to meet even their most basic needs.

This alarming trend reveals deep shortcomings in government policies that have failed to protect those who keep the country running.

In recent years, the cost of living has surged dramatically.

Prices of essential goods such as rice, fuel, transportation, and housing continue to rise faster than wages.

While inflation erodes purchasing power, wage increases remain minimal and often delayed.

For millions of workers earning the minimum wage, a full day’s labor is no longer enough to secure a dignified life.

Government policies have not kept pace with these realities. Instead of strengthening labor protections and implementing meaningful wage reforms, policymakers often prioritize economic growth indicators and investor confidence.

While these goals may attract business, they do little to ensure that the benefits of growth reach ordinary workers.

The result is an economy where productivity rises but workers remain trapped in financial insecurity.

Social protection systems also remain inadequate. Programs meant to cushion the vulnerable such as healthcare support, housing initiatives, and unemployment assistance are often limited, underfunded, or difficult to access.

For working families facing sudden illness, job instability, or rising debts, the lack of reliable safety nets pushes them closer to poverty.

The emergence of the “new poor” should serve as a warning.

Poverty is no longer confined to the unemployed or marginalized; it is spreading among those who work every day yet cannot keep up with the cost of survival.

If government policies continue to overlook the realities of the working class, the gap between economic growth and social well-being will only widen.

A nation cannot thrive when its workers struggle merely to endure.

True progress requires policies that value labor, ensure fair wages, and guarantee that hard work leads not to hardship, but to stability and dignity.
