“When you’re alone with your thoughts, things can get a little too much. When you put things on paper, you get a sense of release.”
A young singer and songwriter from Davao is slowly garnering the attention he deserves because of his talent and musical prowess.
Paolo Melendez has been writing lyrics and playing his piano to express how he views pop music.
This is his best way to heal from his anxieties.
“When you’re alone with your thoughts, things can get a little too much. When you put things on paper, you get a sense of release,” he said. “I see that also in my music now. Before, my approach was to be a little vague. Now, I’m sharing more specific details about myself.”
His first released song, “Skin”, was merely a passion project in the time of lockdown. It was featured on Magic 89.1 radio station in Davao, and that was the exact moment he realized that his music can be something extraordinary.
He describes his music aesthetic as something that can be enjoyed within the four walls of your private bedroom.
He said, “With my song “Don’t Leave it On Your Lips,” if you read the lyrics, it is a sad song but it is very danceable, very ’80s. I think, to best describe my music now, it would be modern disco pop. I didn’t want to make a pop song that is only catchy. I enjoy it when it is catchy and has underlying emotions.”
His other song, “You’ll Never Know”, was created for a songwriting competition, Himig Handog and the Mindanao Pop Festival (MinPop).
He makes sure that his music reflects his identity as a Bisaya.
“Even though I chose English as the language for my songwriting, because I also wanted my works to be universal, the Bisaya attitude is there.”
