There is a need to “redefine” affordable housing to fit not only the changing needs of the Filipino family but also for the changing economic and social trends.
This was the message of the Organization of Socialized and Economic Housing Developers of the Philippines (OSDHP) as it reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the nation's housing sector, aiming to make affordable housing a tangible reality for all Filipinos.
At the annual Affordable Housing Summit held at Solaire Resort North, OSDHP National President Gino Olivares emphasized the need to redefine affordable housing.
"Affordable housing should no longer be equated with substandard and minimal options. The modern definition should involve homes that are accessible, well-located, and environmentally sustainable, enhancing the quality of life for every Filipino family," he stated.
Addressing the challenge of rising land and construction costs is crucial for improving affordability, particularly for individuals entering the workforce or those in lower income brackets.
"We must view affordable housing not merely as a necessity but as a cornerstone of our ongoing development. It is not just a social responsibility but a key driver of sustainable progress," Olivares asserted.
With the Philippines facing a significant housing deficit, estimated at 6.5 million units as of 2022, the need for innovative solutions in affordable housing is more pressing than ever.
