Former Rep. Salvador Belaro Jr. and current Rep. Joel Chua (3rd District, Manila) sent their good luck to the bar takers this month as they emphasized the need for candidates to have peace of mind, mental clarity, good memory, and concise and responsive writing.

Rep. Joel Chua (3rd District, Manila), a lawyer himself, said the country needs lawyers who are adaptive and with good moral compass, apart from being devoted to championing truth, justice and equality/equity for all.

In wishing good luck to all the bar takes this month, Chua said “we need lawyers who have good moral compass while adapting to the continually changing times, the growing demands of serving the people, the changing demographics of our population, and the rise of the post-millennials.

The pervasive influence of new technologies and new ways of living life are also among what all lawyers must adapt to in the years and decades ahead.

The learning never stops. Learning must be lifelong. Keep hope alive. Keep your inner fire burning.

Similarly, former partylist Rep. (now law dean of Wesleyan University, Salvador Belaro Jr. took pride that the school churned out 19 of 20 bar takers in the class of 2020, who took the bar for the first time and passed with 95 percent grade.

Belaro became a Dean of the College of Law at Wesleyan University in 2019 and a Professor of Political Law, Legal Writing, and Alternative Dispute Resolution.

“We have a good solid curriculum and faculty. Christian education is the bedrock of learning at Wesleyan. Our University President, retired Judge Benjamin D. Turgano, was elected to the presidency of the Association of Christian Schools, Colleges, and Universities (ACSCU) for 2021 to 2024,” Belaro Jr said.

“The campus environment at Wesleyan University - Philippines is conducive to learning. The curriculum we have is centered on the learner, mastery of the law, and service to society,” he explained.

“I wish our first-time takers of this year’s bar examinations the grace of calmness, clarity of thought, the gift of good memory, and concise and responsive writing,” he continued.

Belaro said the country needs good, effective, compassionate, and impassioned lawyers.

“We live in exciting and dynamic times wherein lawyers have essential roles to uphold the truth, champion the rule of law, and serve the people. Lawyers today and more so in the future must be updated on new specialties and new technologies,” said Belaro Jr.

Justice is essential to people. A dynamic, well-run community depends on respecting and advancing the rule of law. The check-and-balance systems are essential.

Facts and evidence are pivotal. Due process and legal processes are in place because these are vital to determining and defending the truth, as well as ensuring proper order and functioning of the systems that impact our daily lives.

“I happen to believe that the general public and every person should have a basic working knowledge of the law. Every person should be aware of their constitutional rights. Every person should be respectful of the rights of others,” he added.
“When we watch or read the news on television or the internet, we should be aware that the many aspects of the law are at work. The law can be made understandable to every person. Lawyers must be at the forefront of educating the public on citizenship and the basics of law,” he continued.
