Two Quezon City roads are now set to be renamed Senator Miriam P. Defensor-Santiago Avenue, as they lapsed into law without the signature of the President. These cover the stretch from North Avenue, crossing Quezon Avenue, to East Avenue pursuant to Republic Act No 11963.
“The Department of Public Works and Highways shall issue the necessary rules, orders, and circulars to implement the provisions of this Act within sixty (60) days from its effectivity,” the law reads.
Former Senator Defensor-Santiago was dubbed “The Iron Lady of Asia” for her exemplary background and experience as legislative and judicial. She held several terms as Philippine Senator and also served as Regional Trial Court Judge, Immigration Commissioner from 1988 to 1989, and Secretary of Agrarian Reform during the administration of the late President Corazon Aquino.
Senator Defensor-Santiago ran for president in 1992, 1998, and 2016 and took a seat as a judge in the International Criminal Court in 2012.
