As of January 6, 2025, Zumarraga Island, Samar has been declared free from red tide toxins, according to the latest advisory issued by Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Eastern Visayas.

While the waters around Zumarraga may be safe, five other locations remain under the threat of toxic red tide due to positive levels of PSP (Paralytic Shellfish Poison).

Daram Island, Irong-irong Bay in Catbalogan City, and Matarinao Bay in Eastern Samar—including General MacArthur, Quinapondan, Hernani, and Salcedo—continue to be monitored for harmful algal blooms.

Additionally, Biliran Island in Biliran Province is also affected, urging local authorities to enforce strict measures against the collection and sale of shellfish.

Residents and fishermen are strictly prohibited from gathering or consuming any shellfish from these affected areas.

Violating this shellfish ban could lead to severe penalties for those caught defying the rules.

On a related note, San Pedro Bay in Basey and Calbayog, Samar remains under local red tide status due to the presence of Pyrodinium bahamense in recent water samples.

BFAR has advised the public to strictly adhere to precautionary measures to safeguard against the consumption of contaminated shellfish and shrimp species, particularly Acetes sp.

The agency is appealing to the community to refrain from collecting, consuming, selling, or transporting marine products from these hazardous waters.

However, the BFAR has clarified that fish, squid, shrimp, and crabs from unaffected regions can still be consumed, provided they are fresh.

It is essential to clean these seafood items properly by removing the internal organs, including gills and intestines, and washing them thoroughly with running water before consumption.

The safety of consumers is paramount, and community compliance is crucial to mitigate health risks, as reiterated by local authorities.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed and practice diligence to protect themselves and their families.
