The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the southwest monsoon, locally known as "habagat," now prevails over most parts of the country.

BRACE yourselves! More heavy rains are coming as summer has officially ended and rainy season has taken over.

That was the warning of the Philippines' state weather bureau as it confirmed the onset of the so-called "wet season."

In a press statement issued Friday (June 5), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said the southwest monsoon, locally known as "habagat," now prevails over most parts of the country.

Residents, especially in Metro Manila and the western parts of the country, are warned against heavy rains that may bring flash floods and landslides.

"The passage of Tropical Storm 'Dante' and the occurrence of widespread rainfall monitored by Pagasa in the last five days for areas under Type I climate confirm the onset of the rainy season," Pagasa administrator Vicente Malano said in the statement.

"The probability of near to above normal rainfall conditions is high in the next two months (June-July). However, breaks in rainfall events (also known as monsoon breaks), which can last for several days or weeks, may still occur."
