Forgot your Beep card? Is the line for single journey tickets too long? Soon, LRT-1 passengers can simply purchase their tickets through various mobile apps.

Last week, the Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) conducted a demonstration of its QR ticketing system as part of its digitalization and contactless commuting efforts.

The QR Ticketing Project is in partnership with AF Payments Inc (AFPI) proposed to the Department of Transportation (DOTr), and the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA).

If approved, LRT-1’s private operator will start to implement the contactless transaction by the first quarter of 2022.

“QR tickets can serve as an alternative to the Single Journey Tickets (SJTs) and may be purchased via mobile apps such as BPI Mobile, PayMaya, and GCash,” they wrote.

The QR tickets generated will be scanned by the QR-acceptance terminals installed at entry and exit gates of LRT-1 stations.

The QR ticket system is only the latest of the upgrades lined up for the LRT-1.

Among the upgrades, is the Cavite Extension project to extend the train line to Bacoor-Cavite. As of August, the 11.7 km extension is reported to be 60-percent complete.

This year, the company also received Gen-4 train sets to replace the trains used since 1984 by 2022.
