TAYABAS CITY, Quezon – The 2nd Cavalry (Masigasig) Battalion of the Philippine Army distributed assistance to around 120 families of the Aeta community in Barangay Tongko in this city Sunday (December 12, 2021).
The battalion gave away food packs, toys, healthy meals, face masks, and books through its "Project Shoebox," where shoeboxes are filled with gifts from the private sector and other organizations.
The project drew support from overseas donors, private companies and other institutions such as Makati Christian School, Kiwanis International, Villa Del Prado, Crime Watch Force, Army Forces and Police Savings and Loan Association, Inc., Rescue 117, Air Material Wing, UWRC, AC Multipurpose Cooperative and Petron.
Kristine Sanchez, chieftain of the Aeta Community, expressed her gratitude to the cavalry.
"Malaki pong tulong ang naibigay ninyong maagang parapasko sa Aeta Community," she said.
Sanchez also expressed her hopes that the Second Cavalry (Masigasig) Battalion will continue to reach out and provide assistance to indigent families.
Meanwhile, the soldiers also turned over children’s books to Reymar Compound Elementary School in Gulang-gulang, Lucena City.
Pearl Tuzon, Principal 1 of Reymar Compound Elementary School, said the donated children's books would help their learners practice their reading skills during this health crisis.
Project Shoebox was first launched in February 2012 by LTC Thomas Sedano, head of the 4th Light Armored Battalion based in Camp Nakar, in partnership with other sectors to deliver hope for poor communities and also encourage everyone to share.
Following its success, the project was tapped and adopted by the entire army unit all over the country.
