With the extreme temperatures the Philippines is experiencing these past days, so has energy consumption – and, according to Senator Sherwin Gatchalian, a worrying trend has emerged: electricity prices have spiked from P6 to P11 per kilowatt-hour due to issues in power generation.
Gatchalian, Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Energy, refrained from alleging conspiracy but emphasized the need for investigation.
He pointed out the surge in prices, particularly during the summer season, and urged scrutiny from a competition standpoint.
Gatchalian urged proactive measures, calling on the Department of Energy (DOE) to establish a task force to mitigate worsening conditions.
He demanded transparency from the DOE regarding the sudden shortage of electricity, especially considering earlier assurances of sufficient supply.
