In a concerning turn of event, a male inmate escaped from the sub-provincial jail in Barangay San Roque, Oras, Eastern Samar, on May 23, 2025.

The person deprived of liberty (PDL) identified as Mario Montiagodo, a 49-year-old resident of Barangay Dao, Oras, Eastern Samar, was initially detained on charges of murder.

OpinYon 8 News team gathered that the incident was discovered shortly after 11:57 AM during the routine headcount conducted by the duty guard, PG1 Eleudura Bianes Tomenio.

During the headcount, PG1 Bianes Tomenio noticed that one inmate was missing.

Immediately, she reported the situation to the outgoing duty personnel, prompting a second headcount to verify the absence. The second count later confirmed that Montiagodo was indeed missing from his cell.

The incident was promptly reported to the Oras Municipal Police Station by PG1 Joseph Logo, a provincial guard assigned to the Oras Sub-Provincial Jail.

As of this writing, it is still unclear how the suspect escaped but locals pointed out that this just shows the lapses from the part of the detention facility and its personnel.

Local authorities immediately launched a manhunt operation to apprehend the escaped inmate with the Oras Municipal Police coordinating with various police stations in the region to facilitate the swift arrest and return of Montiagodo to jail.
