A woman was alone, trapped, and died in a fire in Barangay Tagbakin in Atimonan town. A male teacher died in a fire in his rented room in Macalelon. Both incidents happened early this year. Just a week ago on March 14th, a three-year-old boy died in a fire in Barangay Tudturan, Infanta.

The number of fires happening in the country is said to be highest in March, as per data from the Bureau of Fire Protection. March is the beginning of dry season in the country, and it is said to be one of the hottest months of the year: reasons why it was declared Fire Prevention Month by virtue of Proclamation No. 115-A and Proclamation No. 360 in 1986.

During this month, firemen are men’s best friend. They become lecturers in seminars. They are the authority that need to be listened to. They risk their lives in line of duty.

If fire happens, best to put it out the earliest time possible. Otherwise, it will have a life of its own, burning every possible hazard and the blaze is deadly to all living beings and destructive to properties.

Electric wirings need to be checked always, avoid overloading on sockets or circuits, electrical appliances and gadgets must be kept unplugged if not in use. Check LPGs and its connections. Gas leaks and lighted cigarettes are sure to cause fire. Check flammable materials in the house, it should be out of reach of children.

A fire exit and emergency plan is needed so that people will know where to go in case of fire emergency. Closing the door of the burning area could help prevent the spread of fire. We have always been taught of the importance of a wet cloth to avoid burn and suffocation from smoke. “Stop, drop, and roll” when clothing catches fire. Call for help, just like the theme of this year’s commemoration - “Sa Pag-iwas sa Sunog, Hindi ka Nag-iisa.”

The BFP keeps reminding the public of these things, but fire still happens. Presence of mind is important. Keeping in mind that fire is fatal should be enough to make us always aware that prevention is the best caution.
