The Philippine National Police (PNP) is betting on its enhanced anti-cybercrime capabilities to stem the wave of disinformation and "fake news" ahead of the May 12 midterm elections.

During a recent media interview, P/Lt. Col. Robert Rodriguez, Commander of the Special Task Force for the 2025 Elections, has vowed to "run after" sources of fake news, particularly on social media.

“One of the efforts done by the House [of Representatives] is to investigate the vloggers. The PNP is also doing that. If there are reports that an individual is purposely creating fake news, we will coordinate with the concerned agencies to take down their page,” Rodriguez said.

Through the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG), the police are more equipped to combat cybercrime, fake news and misinformation to prevent any election-related violence and promote a secure voting environment.

PNP recognizes the increasing influence of disinformation in elections and their close coordination with social media companies allows them to properly investigate the sources of disinformation and possibly call for their account’s deactivation.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Marbil stressed that every effort is being made by the PNP to protect the integrity of the democratic process, avoid misinformation that could mislead voters, and ensure that the will of the people is upheld without fear, violence, or manipulation.

Marbil then assured the public that the PNP is fully committed to ensuring a secure, fair, and peaceful exercise of elections with a proactive collaboration with security agencies.

“Andito kami—ang PNP, COMELEC, AFP, at PCG—for accountability. In 100 days, we want a safe election. But this is not just our responsibility; it is a shared accountability,” the PNP chief added.

Aside from going after sources of disinformation, PNP remains focused on eradicating the "3G" (guns, goons, and gold) that are central to the police’s campaign against any election-related violence, vote buying, and other corrupt practices during elections.
