With the recent problems in the supply of meat, some sectors have advocated "plant-based meat" as a viable substitute.
Due to the shortage of pork and poultry meats caused by the African swine fever and the bird flu, the Philippines – especially Metro Manila – has experienced a price hike of up to P400 per kilo of pork.
With this, People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is calling on the government to make more time and set aside more budget to fund more options of plant-based meat.
This is an alternative to animal meats like pork, chicken, and beef.
According to Nirali Shah, the senior campaign manager of PETA Asia, there would be no shortage of meat only if there are other options available.
Aside from being cheaper alternatives, plant-based meat is healthier and more convenient. “There are wonderful vegan, mock meats available across the country, which are packed with protein, delicious, easy to prepare, and free of saturated animal fat and cholesterol,” she said.
There are only a few companies that are selling authentic plant-based meats in the market such as Century Pacific and San Miguel. PETA urges more companies, funded by the government and/or the private sector, to release plant-based options and make this a viable option for the general public.
This, in a way, will help deal with the shortage of meats all over the country and will also urge more people to live healthier lives. (EFO)
