Pinoy students bag medals at 21st Math Olympiad

Filipino students from public and private schools across the country won 19 medals during the 21st International Mathematics and Science Olympiad, held in China from October 1 to 6.

The Mathematics Trainers’ Guild Philippines (MTG), the organization responsible for training the participants, said the students secured one gold, 10 silver, and eight bronze medals in the prestigious competition.

The students competed at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, going up against over 300 participants from various countries, including Botswana, Bulgaria, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and China.

MTG head Simon Chua praised the Philippine team’s gold medalist, Heal Job Esio, a Grade 6 student from Pangasinan Universal Institute in Dagupan City, for his outstanding achievement.

The silver medalists included Elizur Daniel Anabieza of Divine Light Academy; Bianca Jayne Ong and Annette Tiffany Yu from St. John’s Institute Bacolod; Ezekiel Anton Tan, Mishael Oikos Chan, and Yingqi Lu from St. Jude Catholic School; Steve Jacob Yu from Xavier School; Leonard Vash Cay from Xavier School Nuvali; Savannah Lucia Sabeen de Guzman from St. Paul College Pasig; and Sophia Yzabel Tiu from the Special Education Center for the Gifted.

Bronze medalists were Eunice Gaerlan from BHC Institution; Erin Leighton Go and Carlo Aceret from St. Jude Catholic School; Kaylee Nichole Tan from Pangasinan Universal Institute; Miguel Yee from St. John’s Institute Bacolod; Issaiah Sean Escobido from Iloilo Scholastic Academy; Alexander Gabriel Ho from Paco Citizen Academy; and Anne Dorothy Madrazo from Timoteo Paez Elementary School.

So far this year, MTG-trained math students have won a total of 242 medals from international competitions, bringing the Philippines’ medal count to 6,556 over the last five years.
