Filipino Lego master builders were sent to work on mysterious patterns without knowing what they were working on. The final products were three mosaic artworks of AMORsolo using Lego bricks.
A LEGO community in the Philippines will soon unveil a Lego mosaic project with the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) and the Fernando C. Amorsolo Art Foundation, Inc.
Dubbed as Project AMORsolo, Pinoy Lego User Group (PinoyLUG) will transpose three great works of Fernando Amorsolo into remarkable masterpieces in Lego bricks mosaic art.
Sponsored by Ban Kee Bricks and Manila Bulletin, the project aims to commemorate Amorsolo’s 50th Anniversary as the first National Artist of the Philippines in Visual Arts.
According to Leslie Araujo, the first Asian Ambassador of the Adult Fan of LEGO (AFOL) in the Philippines, he was cleaning his house during the 2021 lockdown when inspiration came.
He found postcards with Fernando Amorsolo prints that belonged to his father who was a fan of the great painter and remembered that his ancestors had been good friends of Amorsolo.
PinoyLUG worked in three big groups of Lego master builders to recreate Early Traders (1948, oil on canvas), Dalagang Bukid (1949, oil on canvas), and Bayanihan (1959, oil on canvas).
However, each participant was unaware of what they were building.
“Each team participant would be given a mysterious pattern to fill,” Leslie writes. “Only then will the finished project be revealed as Project AMORsolo.”
He also shared delays in the progress of the mosaic due to the rarity of Lego bricks that could match the shapes and colors of the paintings. Many pieces had to be ordered from abroad.
The paintings were also carefully chosen for their close association with PinoyLUG’s mission of spreading the message of Lego:
“to create communities that build and share together, promoting the Filipino’s culture in creativity through diverse team activities.”
Project AMORsolo will open at the Bulwagang Carlos V. Francisco (Little Theater Lobby) CCP, Roxas Boulevard, in Pasay City, Philippines from April 29 to May 29, 2022.
It will move to a more public setting after its initial display at the CCP.
