Nine Filipino inventions secured medals at the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva (IEIG) in Switzerland, highlighting the nation's growing prowess in technological advancement.
Among the distinguished winners were technologies from the Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI), including a revolutionary hemostat for emergency treatment, lauded for its ability to enhance blood-clotting, and the versatile carboxymethyl hyaluronic acid (CMHA) hydrogels with applications across various industries.
Adding to the accolades, the DOST-Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI) received recognition for its mobile water disinfection system, heralded as a transformative solution ensuring access to clean drinking water, particularly in remote or disaster-affected regions.
Notable among the awardees was Prof. Zaldy Fernandez of Mariano Marcos State University, whose multi-fuel dryer, doubling as both a dryer and an oven, revolutionizes food and textile processing.
Securing bronze awards were five other innovations: eco-bamboo textiles and lyocell blended yarns from the DOST-Philippine Textile Research Institute, flavored salt and seasoning from the DOST-ITDI, super water absorbent technology from the DOST-PNRI, and the pili seal from Mark Kennedy Bantugon.
Recognizing their exceptional contributions, the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship of King Khalid University bestowed special awards upon select inventions.
DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. lauded the remarkable performance of Filipino innovations at IEIG 2024, emphasizing their role in showcasing the nation's ongoing commitment to research, development, and global competitiveness.
Solidum expressed pride in the Filipino delegates, acknowledging their dedication and excellence in representing the country on the international stage.
Among the esteemed delegates were Maricar Carandang, Prime Joy Margarito, Julius Leano, Evangeline Flor Manalang, Lorna Relleve, and Charito Aranilla, alongside non-DOST inventors Prof. Zaldy Fernandez and Mark Kennedy Bantugon.
