Here’s another Filipino celebrity who is mostly underrated and sidetracked despite her achievements in a multidisciplinary categorization.
Dr. Ria Liza Centeno-Canlas isn’t only a civil engineer who graduated from the Mapua Institute of Technology, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Technology from the Technological University of the Philippines (TUP), an entrepreneur, among others.
She is also an inventor.
Dr. Centeno-Canlas has invented hollow blocks not from the usual sand pebbles and cement but from environment-friendly materials, like derivatives from plants or other natural substances.
Although Ria Liza has disclosed some of the mixes of her hollow blocks and other building materials, she couldn’t completely divulge all her sources of the items because of what she called “trade secret protocol.”
Because of this invention, she received the very first Good Design Award Philippines in 2019 given by the Design Center of the Philippines in cooperation with the Design Advisory Council and the Japan Institute of Design Promotion.
The plum Dr. Centeno-Canlas received was specifically designed by National Artist for Visual Arts Arturo Luz.
Ria Liza is an Executive Member of the National Innovation Council (NIC) and as such, she belongs to the scientific community. “But I also want to remind the public that science also involves arts and other disciplines,” she explained.
Film, she said, can also innovate and make something new again as it is also science in holistic approach to life in general.
Dr. Centeno-Canlas and this writer were speakers at the recently held symposium titled “Unboxing Filipinnovation Mindset” where we talked about innovativeness which on my part I explained multimedia innovation.
