PH Volleyball national team ends Brazil training camp on a high note

The Philippine women’s national volleyball team concluded its series of friendlies in Sao Paolo after winning in four out of five matches during their two-week training for the 31st Southeast Asian (SEA) Games under coach Jorge Edson Souza de Brito.

Having dropped their first tune-up together as a team against Brazilian club squad Sao Caetano less than a day after arriving from a long 36-hour trip from Manila, the Filipina spiker never dropped a single tune-up since then.

With their next game against Sesi Sorocaba, the national team dealt with them in straight sets on the enemy’s turf before crushing the Barueri Volleyball Club under-21 (BVC U21) squad in three matches.

Head coach Jorge Edson Souza de Brito approached his sweaty players one by one, patting everybody on the back for another job well done as they concluded their training.

“We started from zero. Now, I can see that we have really improved a lot since we came here,’’ said De Brito after nearly two weeks of continuous training and building of chemistry within the team.

Mylene Paat and Jaja Santiago led the way during the final tune- up, together with emphatic hitters Alyssa Valdez and Ces Molina in an impressive 25-18, 25-14, 25-23, 25-18 win before a crowd of Filipino fans at Sportville.

“We gradually improved in all areas, but of course it’s not enough. The good thing about this camp here is we are ready to use all the players because I can now trust them as a team,’’ said De Brito.

According to head coach De Brito, the PH spikers led by captain Aby Marano, Alyssa Valdez and Jaja Santiago together with veterans Mylene Paat, Ces Molina, Kat Tolentino, Jema Galanza, setters Iris Tolenada, Kyle Negrito, middle blockers Dell Palomata, Ria Meneses, Majoy Baron and liberos Kath Arado and Dawn Macandili will arrive home on Friday and will be given a two-day rest before resuming practice on May 2.
