The Women’s World Cup trophy will be making a stop in the Philippines as part of its tour before the highly anticipated 2023 FIFA World Cup in Australia and New Zealand
The FIFA Women’s World Cup trophy will be making a stop in the Philippines for its trophy tour promotion for the upcoming 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand next year.
The Philippines has been selected as one of its destinations for the first time in history after the Filipinas qualified for the quadrennial showcase and booked its first ticket to the World Cup early this year.
"We have received notice that the Philippines is part of the trophy tour of the Women's World Cup 2023," Philippine Football Federation (PFF) Secretary General Atty. Ed Gastanes said during the online forum of the Philippine Sportswriters Association on Tuesday.
"This is the first time that we are announcing this because we still have to have a formal zoom meeting. But you can say and we can say that the Philippines will be part of the trophy tour,” he added.
Top football players, both active and retired, as well as FIFA executives will parade the trophy in different countries next year.
"FIFA is also planning to do something here in the Philippines... Probably we'll [also] come up with something that will drum up the support for the women's [team]. Marami na rin kasing nagtatanong ng ticket sa New Zealand," said PFF President Nonong Araneta, who was also present in the online forum.
Additionally, Araneta claimed that the PFF is looking to work with travel agencies to set up packages for an easier and cheaper process to watch the Women’s World Cup.
The PFF is also aiming to play at least a minimum of 10 friendlies, here and overseas, as part of their training for the July 20 to August 20 tournament co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
Gastanes added that the Filipinas are already set to play with a South American country for two matches by next month.
“We cannot inform you the name of the country yet, because we have stipulated that we will announce it jointly. But it’s a South American country, it has been in the World Cup, and it’s been to the Tokyo Olympics,” Gastanes said.
The Filipinas will be against Norway, Switzerland, and host New Zealand, after the team was placed in Group A at the official draw last week at Auckland.
