Athletes show solidarity in campaign sortie for Leni-Kiko.
Philippine athletes came together to show support for their presidential and vice presidential bets, Vice President Leni Robredo and Sen. Kiko Pangilinan respectively, in the “Angatleta sa Araneta” campaign sortie on Tuesday, May 3 at the heart of Cubao.
Tickets were free while shirts were put on sale worth P299 for closer seats and better viewing experience for the fans.
Headlining the event were Ateneo De Manila alums Alyssa Valdez, Kat Tolentino, Bea de Leon, Deanna Wong, Denden Lazaro, Maddie Madayag and NLEX Road Warriors coach Yeng Guiao.
"Natutuwa po ako ngayon hindi lang po sports, hindi lang basketball, volleyball... ang hinaharap natin sa Pilipinas ang ipinunta natin dito," said Guiao.
"Last 2 minutes na po ng ating laro. Full court press na, man-to-man at tao sa tao na ang labanan."
Both Valdez and Guiao have been vocal all throughout the campaign period and have been doing house-to-house campaigns in various cities and barangays.
The event consisted of torch lighting, cheerleading, volleyball exhibition games and photo opportunities with athletes.
Team Angat – bannered by former FEU Lady Tamaraws’ Carly Hernandez and former UP Lady Maroons’ Kathy Bersola – swept Team Buhay, 26-24, 25-12, in the women’s category.
Also attending the event were Carmela Tunay, Alyssa Eroa, Cherilyn Sindayen, Maruja Banaticla, Marian Buitre, Joyce Palad, South Ramos, Angeli Araneta, Jem Ferrer, Ponggay Gaston, Jules Samonte and Chie Saet among others.
Representing the men’s volleyball were Ish Polvorosa, Josh Villanueva, Rex Intal, Julius Sioson, Lloyd Josafat, Ysay Marasigan, Josh Umandal, Alfred Valbuena, Josh Retamarand Manuel Sumanguid, to name a few.
Tricia Robredo, daughter of VP Leni and former National University courtside reporter, thanked the athletes and the crowd for extending their support for her mom.
"Nandito po ako para magpasalamat sa inyo in person... sa mga atleta po natin alam kong marami sa inyong nababash dahil sa paniniwala po ninyo. Pero the fact na tumitindig kayo, ipinapakita lang sa ating lahat na tama ang iniidolo nating mga tao," said Robredo.
"Matchpoint na tayo. Sabi nila dehado tayo, pero mas masarap ang panalo pag underdog. Sabi nga ni coach Tai (Bundit) nung Season 66, Happy, unity and heart strong!"
