The Philippines has joined four other countries in an effort to improve aviation safety and ensure safer skies in the Asia-Pacific region.
At the 59th Directors General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) Conference in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) announced that they had reached an agreement or Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, and Thailand on the Regional Aviation Safety Data and Information Sharing Initiative.
The goal of the agreement is to improve CAAP's safety management efforts by using safety data to detect potential hazards, monitor patterns, and enhance risk management in line with the objectives of the Asia-Pacific Regional Aviation Safety Plan.
The collaboration was initially suggested at the Asia-Pacific Summit for Aviation Safety in Singapore in 2023, showing the Philippines' dedication to upholding top-tier aviation safety standards in the area.
CAAP Director General Manuel Antonio Tamayo emphasized the importance of collaboration in the aviation industry due to its cross-border nature. Through this agreement enables participating countries to collectively pinpoint emerging trends and hazards, fostering the continuous advancement of proactive safety measures that support safety objectives in the Asia-Pacific region.
The shared data, sourced from mandatory safety reporting systems, will initially focus on seven key safety categories, including severe turbulence and dangerous goods incidents. The Philippines will actively collect and analyze this data to identify regional safety trends.
It sets the foundation for increased collaboration between nations in Southeast Asia, with hopes that more countries will participate in the future, thereby pushing forward the joint initiative to guarantee the safety of air travelers throughout the region.
Tamayo believes that hosting the DGCA will showcase the country's commitment to aviation safety and security while paving the way for a sustainable future in aviation.
The Philippines is hosting the 59th DGCA conference in Cebu from October 14 to 18.
This event provides an opportunity for the discussion of policy, theoretical matters, and worldwide patterns, while bringing government officials, airline industry leaders, aviation infrastructure developers, and safety specialists to tackle obstacles and upcoming trends in the aviation field.
