The Marcos administration has announced plans to construct a P2.3-billion hemodialysis center at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) in Quezon City, in response to the annual increase in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) cases.

Speaker Martin Romualdez presided over the groundbreaking ceremony for the 13-floor facility, which will feature state-of-the-art machines and be staffed by specialists and trained healthcare personnel.

"This project signifies more than just the construction of a building. It symbolizes our commitment to providing hope, modern healthcare, and improved quality of life for millions of Filipinos battling kidney ailments," Romualdez remarked.

He further elaborated that this initiative is part of the broader "Legacy Specialty Hospital" program initiated by the Marcos administration.

NKTI Executive Director Rose Marie Rosete-Liquete emphasized the urgency of the project, citing a staggering 412 percent annual increase in ESRD cases.

This surge underscores the critical necessity for a dedicated facility to address the growing prevalence of kidney diseases.

The NKTI, built during the time of former President Ferdinand Marcos, Sr., is the country's first and primary tertiary medical specialty center for renal health.
