Once an “offbeat” destination, Kalanggaman Island in Palompon, Leyte started gaining international attention after a German luxury cruise ship with 400 passengers stopped over at the island in early 2013.

AFTER nearly a year of hiatus brought by the Covid-19 pandemic, Kalanggaman Island in Palompon, Leyte is once again open for tourists.

However, only local tourists are currently allowed inside the island, according to Mayor Myrna Georgina Arevalo.

Non-local tourists will be required to have an early reservation before visiting the island and must abide by strict health protocols, the mayor added.

Currently, the local government has set a cap on the island’s capacity, limiting it to 100 persons at a time.

The island management has also accepted reservation from foreign cruise ships to be accommodated by 2023.

Once an “offbeat” destination, Kalanggaman Island (named due to its bird-like shape; “langgam” is Visayan for bird) started gaining international attention after a German luxury cruise ship with 400 passengers stopped over at the island in early 2013.

Since then, Kalanggaman has been a popular destination for international cruise ships, enabling the island to recover from the devastation brought by supertyphoon “Yolanda” later that year.

Tourists can enjoy a multitude of activities at the island, including swimming, kayaking, scuba diving, and aqua-biking. (JKA)
