Legendary bowling star Paeng Nepomuceno reigns on top in the over 65 singles category at the 16th Asian Senior Championships.
Six-time world champion Rafael "Paeng" Nepomuceno proved he’s still the one to beat as he bagged the gold medal for the Philippines in the men's singles 65 and above category in the 16th Asian Senior Bowling Championships at the Sunway Megalanes in Petaling Jaya City, Malaysia on November 10.
Nepomuceno rolled his way to 1264 points as he bested 59 other veterans including Japanese Akira Nakada with a score of 1238, good for a silver medal, and Korean Jin Headong and Leung Wai Man Raymond of Hong Kong with 1223 a piece to settle for a shared third place.
According to Spin.ph, the bowling legend clinched the top spot after scoring 248 in the fifth game and a strong closer with 231.
"I am happy to have given glory to the Philippines. I want to thank the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Philippine Bowling Federation, Inc. (PBF) and Philippine Senior Bowlers (PSB) for the support. I was so happy to hear our National Anthem again after all these years," said the Philippine sports icon in an online interview with the Philippine News Agency on Friday.
Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Noli Eala also took the time to recognize the bowling legend in a post on his official Twitter account.
“Bowling Hall of Famer and legend Paeng Nepomuceno of the Phl won GOLD in the singles of the Asian Seniors age 65+ category. Paeng averaged 210 in 6 games to stamp his class once more. Congrats Paeng! You continue to make us proud. Mabuhay!,” the tweet wrote
The 65-year-old is recognized nationally and globally after hustling his way to a series of triumphs, including four World Cup crowns in 1976, 1980, 1992 and 1996, an accomplishment Nepomuceno only holds that paved the way to being featured in the Guinness Book of Records, according to PhilStar.
