ILOILO CITY celebrates a momentous occasion with the launch of “Iloilo City Rises,” on May 20, 2024, a beautifully crafted coffee-table book that captures the essence of the city’s rich history and vibrant present. The 256-page book, measuring 9” x 12”, tells the story of Iloilo City’s evolution through captivating narratives and stunning photographs.

Iloilo City’s journey began as a Spanish settlement in the mid-16th century. It achieved city status in 1889, was reincorporated in 1937, and became a highly urbanized city in 1979.

Today, under the dynamic leadership of Mayor Jerry P. Treñas and the unwavering support of its residents, Iloilo City continues to flourish, propelled by the lifeblood of the Iloilo River.

City of Love

The book, co-published by the Iloilo Festivals Foundation, Inc. (IFFI) and Kasingkasing Press, features seven essays penned and photographed by Ilonggos who call the city home. These essays offer an intimate look at the diverse facets of Iloilo City: its harmonious blend of heritage and modernity, its thriving economy, and its compassionate social programs that embody the spirit of “pagpalangga” in the “City of Love.”

Iloilo City is renowned as the educational hub of Western Visayas, fostering a deep connection between its people and the natural environment.

The city is also a cultural hotspot, hosting numerous conferences, events, and recreational activities. Its culinary excellence earned it a spot among UNESCO’s Creative Cities for Gastronomy in 2023, further highlighting its rich gastronomic heritage.

Better Life for All

The book opens with a forward-looking essay by former Senator Franklin Drilon, a staunch advocate for Iloilo’s development.

Drilon praises the city’s growth, stating, “The light of day reveals even more exciting developments … [attesting] to our Mayor Jerry Treñas’ delivery on his promise of a better life for every Ilonggo.”

Mayor Treñas himself contributes an inspiring essay, reflecting on the city’s resilience and potential: “As we Ilonggos grow more secure in the greater knowledge of ourselves in the context of our ecosystem — what we are capable of giving or taking, and our amazing ability to absorb and recover from, and prepare for future shocks, whether they be economic, environmental, social, and institutional — we know that, indeed, the best is yet to come.”
