The provincial government of Southern Leyte is now preparing to roll out the distribution of P20-per-kilo rice under the Marcos administration's "Benteng Bigas Meron Na" program.

Southern Leyte Governor Damian Mercado has announced that documents are being prepared to purchase 30,000 bags of rice for the program.

Irwin Sy, head of the Provincial Agricultural Services Office (PAgSO), stated in an interview with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) that the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for purchasing rice stocks has already been prepared, particularly after the national and local elections held on May 12.

Sy mentioned that stocks will be purchased at ₱33 per kilo and sold to the public at ₱20 per kilo, with FTI and the provincial government covering the difference.

He also anticipates receiving a complete set of detailed guidelines and procedures regarding the selling process from the regional agriculture office.

The “Benteng Bigas Meron Na” subsidized rice program was initiated by the Department of Agriculture in collaboration with Food Terminal Inc. (FTI), with the active participation of local government units.
