The provincial government of Northern Samar has released P1.33 million in allowances to nursing scholars under its provincial scholarship program, covering financial support for the second semester of the 2025–2026 academic year.
Provincial records show that 31 nursing students benefited from the release, with each scholar receiving P43,000.
The amount covers stipends as well as book and uniform allowances.
The distribution was conducted after scholars complied with documentary requirements set by the province.
Aside from the allowances given directly to students, the provincial government also shoulders other education-related expenses connected to the scholarship.
These payments are remitted directly to partner schools once enrollment and academic documents are verified.
Provincial officials said the arrangement is intended to ensure that funds are used strictly for educational purposes.
The nursing scholarship program has been in place as part of Northern Samar’s effort to support local students pursuing health-related degrees.
The province, like many areas outside major urban centers, continues to face challenges related to the availability of healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, in public hospitals and rural health units.
Under the program, scholars are required to maintain their academic standing and comply with regular reporting requirements.
Failure to meet the conditions may result in delays or suspension of benefits, according to guidelines set by the provincial government.
Scholars are also expected to complete their degree programs within the prescribed period.
The recent release comes at a time when nursing education costs remain a concern for many families, particularly in provinces with limited economic opportunities.
Tuition fees, learning materials, and clinical requirements have been cited by students as major expenses throughout the course of their studies.
Education and health sector observers note that while scholarship assistance helps reduce financial pressure on students, its long-term impact will depend on whether graduates eventually enter the local health system.
Northern Samar continues to rely heavily on a limited number of nurses in government-run facilities, especially in far-flung municipalities.
Provincial officials have not announced whether additional scholars will be added to the program within the year, but said existing beneficiaries will continue to receive support subject to compliance with program rules and availability of funds.
As the province allocates resources for education and health-related initiatives, the nursing scholarship program remains one of several interventions aimed at addressing workforce gaps.
Whether such measures will significantly improve healthcare staffing in Northern Samar will likely become clearer in the coming years, as more scholars complete their studies and enter the profession.
