Severe Tropical Storm Opong (international name Bualoi) lashed Eastern Visayas over the weekend, leaving at least 10 people dead and displacing more than 430,000 residents, according to official reports.
The storm struck San Policarpo, Eastern Samar, around 11:30 p.m. on Friday with maximum sustained winds of about 110 kilometers per hour and gusts reaching 135 kph, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
Authorities confirmed that seven of the fatalities were from Biliran province, with others reported in nearby areas.
The victims died mostly from drowning, falling trees, and collapsed structures as floods rose quickly in both coastal and upland communities.
At least 433,000 people were evacuated from flood- and landslide-prone villages across Eastern Visayas and nearby provinces, including residents living near Mayon Volcano where authorities feared volcanic mudflows
In Eastern Samar, roofs were ripped from houses, fishing boats were smashed along shorelines, and roads became impassable due to floodwaters and landslides.
Biliran province, where most of the casualties were recorded, also reported widespread destruction of homes and agricultural land.
Communication lines and electricity service were cut off in several municipalities after trees and utility poles collapsed.
More than 5,500 passengers, truck drivers, and cargo helpers were stranded in 118 ports nationwide after sea travel was suspended for safety.
Tacloban Airport reported temporary flooding but reopened for limited flights once weather conditions improved.
Classes and government work across Eastern Visayas were suspended during the storm, adding to the disruption of daily life.
While full assessments are ongoing, early reports indicate damage to homes, schools, and public infrastructure, along with losses in agriculture and fisheries.
