"It won't last a month." That was the derision of critics who deadpanned a small tallboy weekly that was started by consumer advocate and public relations specialist Ray Junia in 2010.
And yet, the very same reasons it was pooh-poohed made OpinYon a standout and a gamechanger in the media industry.
As Junia himself has reiterated countless times, OpinYon is NOT simply a newspaper. True to its name, it carries the well-thought, well-versed and well-researched opinions of people who believe that media should be more than a “reporter” but an advocate of genuine, pro-people progress.
It’s been almost 15 years since OpinYon first rolled off the press, and it has adjusted itself to meet both the changing times and the need to bring its own brand of advocacy-based journalism to the local level.
But it has never forgotten its original purpose.
And today, in a changing media landscape where information is now just literally a click away, OpinYon has managed to adapt its own brand to access a new generation of readers – a generation who are now more tech-savvy, but who are also more vulnerable to the impacts of disinformation and fake news.
The successes of OpinYon Laguna and OpinYon 8 have proved that OpinYon’s brand of journalism is exactly what is needed for our towns, cities and provinces to achieve socio-economic progress.
This year, amidst increasing social, political and economic uncertainties, OpinYon remains committed to its longstanding formula of “politicizing economic issues and giving an economic perspective to political issues.”
The trends may come and go, but OpinYon continues to take a stand – and will remain standing as long as there are people like us who are willing to champion the cause of the Filipino.
Here’s to many more years of OpinYon!
