Since it was relocated to a new site near the Biñan Organik Farm last year, the old schoolbuildings of the Dela Paz National High School have become idle and unused for months.
But not for long, according to local authorities.
Taking advantage of the expected onset of the "dry season," the Biñan City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) is now fast-tracking repair works to the old schoolbuilding - this time, for a new purpose.
In a Facebook post, the Biñan CDRRMO announced that the old DPNHS buildings will soon be repurposed as an alternative evacuation center for residents of Barangay Dela Paz.
The barangays Dela Paz and Malaban were often the hardest-hit during the rainy season, with mandatory evacuations part of everyday life for their residents during typhoons and heavy rains.
According to the Biñan CDRRMO, repairs to the buildings are now 80 percent complete.
"Sa mandato ng ating Mayor Gel Alonte ating tinitiyak din na ang mga residente ng Pulo sa Barangay Dela Paz ay may pupuntahan kapag tumataas ang tubig baha," local disaster authorities said in its Facebook post.
Aside from completing repairs to the schoolbuilding, authorities are now also completing the cleanup works to canals and waterways around Barangay Dela Paz in preparation for the rainy season.
