NU Lady Bulldogs sweeps S84 to claim title
The National University Lady Bulldogs completes a historic season after winning the UAAP Season 84 women’s volleyball championship against the De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Spikers, 25-15, 25-15, 25-22, on Tuesday, June 21.
NU now joins De La Salle University and Ateneo de Manila University as the only schools to sweep an entire season in the Final Four era of the UAAP in Season 67 and Season 77, respectively.
The Lady Bulldogs, made up of the core of the school’s high school program, dropped only five sets all in all in the whole season.
Led by Bella Belen, who was named the Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player for this season and the first time this feat has been achieved in the women’s division, tallying 16 points off of 13 attacks and three blocks.
“Siguro po kailangan magtrabaho pa po ako at hindi ako huminto sa kung ano nakuha ngayon. Sabi po kasi ng coach namin before, kada araw may pinapanganak sa amin na mas magaling,” said Belen after scoring the win.
“Dapat hindi po ako nasa-satisfy sa kung anong meron ako ngayon. Rookie-MVP ako ngayon, so bukas, may mas gagaling pa sa akin,” she added.
Named Best Opposite Spiker, Alyssa Solomon tallied 18 markers off 15 kills and three kill blocks, Finals MVP Cess Robles had six points and 15 digs, Best Setter Lams Lamina had 14 excellent sets, and Best Libero Jennifer Nierva got 19 excellent digs and 10 excellent receptions in the Lady Bulldogs' championship match.
For the second straight finals game, no La Salle player scored in double-digits as Thea Gagate, First Best Middle Blocker, tried to power her team to stay alive for another game with eight points, while Leiah Malaluan had seven in the losing cause.
Completing the awardees for this season are Sheena Toring, Second Best Middle Blocker, and Faith Nisperos of the Ateneo Blue Eagles is named Second Best Outside Hitter, all of which came from the NU high school volleyball program.
