The NU Lady Bulldogs extends their historic win streak at 97 after zooming past the UE Lady Warriors, 131-47.
The National University Lady Bulldogs opened UAAP Season 85 by breaking records in the women’s basketball tournament against the University of the East Lady Warriors, 131-47, on Sunday, October 2, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
Playing their first game since November 2019, the 84-point rout stretches NU’s winning streak to 97 while recording the most points in the league’s women’s basketball history since the digital era of stats and surpassing University of Santo Tomas’ 129-point outing against University of the Philippines last September 22, 2018.
NU’s previous season high was 112 points recorded on September 11, 2019 when the team was still under seasoned mentor Pat Aquino against the De La Salle Lady Archers.
“We’re just happy na bumalik na ‘yong basketball for women’s, ang tagal naming hinintay and I wanna congratulate the girls for starting this season with a convincing win,” said NU coach Aris Dimaunahan of his record-breaking debut.
The charge of the Lady Bulldogs was headed by their leading scorer Camille Clarin with 22 points, seven rebounds, and four assists, together with mainstays Karl Pingol with 16 points, six rebounds, and six steals, and Tin Cayabyab whi contributed 14 points.
Showing no decline in their game despite the lopsided nature, the lady ballers reached the century mark with less than two minutes still left to play in the third quarter.
“It was a statement to the UAAP that we’re back,” said Clarin. “New coach, new players, but we still have the same culture and same goals.”
Other players who had a strong showing in their S85 debut game are one-and-done player Annick Tiky with 11 points and eight rebounds, Angel Surada who tallied the game’s only double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Gypsy Canuto with seven points and 10 assists.
