The Department of Agriculture is now talking about a shortage of salt.
The supposed low supply of sugar has not yet been resolved, now comes a shortage of salt which is hounding the Department of Agriculture also.
DA Senior Undersecretary Domingo F. Panganiban said on Monday that there is a scarcity of salt due to the 15-year neglect of this sector.
He said that the production of salt in the country’s output had declined.
"We have a big problem with the salt production. We have at least half a P500 million shortage in salt production," Panganiban said in the Manila Times report.
The former DA secretary cited that the government had to buy salt due to scarcity.
"Because we have no program for the sector, we are importing. At present, salt production is only being done in Batangas, Cagayan, and Mindanao," Panganiban said.
Unknown to many, he claimed, salt plays a significant role in the production of coconuts.
"Coconut trees thrive near the shores as salt acts as a fertilizer," he said.
But salt is also a basic preservative for fishery products, among others.
