Despite red tide alert in some parts of Eastern Visayas, authorities denied there is an ongoing shellfish ban.

The warnings were in the areas surrounding Irong-Irong Bay in Catbalogan City, Matarinao Bay in Eastern Samar (General MacArthur, Quinapondan, Hernani, and Salcedo), and around the coastal waters of Guiuan, Eastern Samar.

Seawater samples collected from these areas were positive for Pyrodinium bahamense, a toxic microorganism that causes Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP).

The public has been advised to refrain from gathering, transporting, and eating all types of shellfish and "alamang" gathered from these areas.

To ensure the utmost protection of the public, local red tide warnings are placed on these bays and coastal waters.

Authorities said fish, squid, shrimp, and crabs from these bays are safe for human consumption, provided that they are fresh, thoroughly washedand internal organs entirely removed before cooking.
