So-called “spaghetti wires” on overhead posts are not just considered as eyesores but also a potential fire hazard for residents.

And as part of its wider “Smart City Infrastructure Program,” the city government of San Pablo, Laguna has committed to remove the tangles of wires that not only pose a hazard but also slow down connectivity.

In a social media post last Tuesday, October 28, the San Pablo City Information Office announced that it is in talks with officials of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) to implement its program dubbed “Spaghetti Wires Project.”

Officials of San Pablo City led by City Engineer Noel Tabo, City Planning and Development Executive Assistant Richmond Concordia, and City Architect Darwin Averion met with DICT Region IV-A Regional Director Reniel Villaflor to discuss the implementation of the Spaghetti Wires Project in the city.

The program is slated for implementation in the last quarter of 2025.

Initially, it will cover the area of downtown San Pablo, from Puregold San Pablo City to the San Pablo Cathedral towards Werner Schetelig Avenue, the main thoroughfare to the towns of Rizal and Nagcarlan.

Funds for the project will come from the private sector, while the DICT and the San Pablo City Task Force for Anti-Dangling Wires and Spaghetti Cables will coordinate on the technical specifications.

According to Management Information Systems Office Chief Ferdinand Alcos, the program initially covered only wires belonging to telecommunications companies.

However, the scope of the “Spaghetti Wires Project” will now also cover electricity lines.

The San Pablo City LGU is now coordinating with the Manila Electric Company (Meralco), the main power distributor for San Pablo City, for the expanded implementation of the project, officials added.
