The Department of Agriculture (DA) has announced that the province of Leyte is now officially free from bird flu.
Memorandum Circular 44 was issued by DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr., signifying Leyte’s avian influenza-free status.
The initial case of pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) subtype H5N1 was reported in the town of Kananga on March 19, impacting broiler breeder chickens.
Tiu Laurel noted that local and provincial governments, in collaboration with the DA regional office and the Bureau of Animal Industry, promptly initiated investigations and implemented measures like depopulation, cleaning, and disinfection in the affected areas.
He added that it has been over 90 days since these cleanup and disinfection efforts were carried out successfully.
Ongoing surveillance and monitoring of the previously affected regions have confirmed the absence of any bird flu presence, according to the Department of Agriculture.
