Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua bested 83 other candidates to receive her country’s first ever Miss Universe during the final’s night for the 72nd Miss Universe held in El Salvador Sunday, November 19.

Asian pride Anntonia Porsild from Thailand secured the first runner-up spot, while Australia’s Moraya Wilson is the 2nd runner-up.

Karla Guilfu Acevedo from Puerto Rico, who also competed in Miss Supranational 2021 and placed 1st Runner Up; and Carla Avella of Columbia, the first mother to enter the Top 5 of the competition, rounded up the Top 5 candidates.

On the other hand, Philippine’s Bet Michelle Marquez Dee finishes in the top 10 of the competition.

Michelle donned a gown made by Filipino designer Mark Bumgarner, intricately designed and inspired by the traditional tattoo arts of Apo Whang-od. She takes home two special awards: one of the gold winners of “Voice for Change”, along with Miss Angola and Miss Puerto Rico; and the Spirit of Carnival Award.

The final three were asked the same questions: “If you could live one year in another woman’s shoes, who would you choose and why?”

Miss Nicaragua’s winning answer centered on the recalibration of women’s limitless opportunities to make history.

“I would choose Mary Wollstonecraft because she opened the gap and gave opportunity to many women and what I would do, I would want that gap, that income gap, open so that women could work in any area that they choose to work in because there are no limitations for women. That was 1750; now in 2023, we are making history.” Miss Nicaragua’s answer on the question-and-answer portion was given using an interpreter.
