The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines is starting to work on the development of the Nabas-Caticlan-Boracay 138-kilovolt line to boost the power grid in Boracay and Caticlan.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has begun work on the development of the Nabas-Caticlan-Boracay 138 kilovolt (kV) line in order to meet the growing demand for electricity in Boracay and Caticlan.

The 138-kilovolt (kV) Nabas-Caticlan-Boracay line would help address the island's and the entire Aklan province's growing load requirements or demand for electricity, Inquirer reported.

Henry Labrada, head of NGCP’s interconnection projects division, said that the project is underway as they have already started the site development and the heavy equipment to be used had already arrived.

The entire project is comprised of several components: underground and submarine cables connecting the mainland to Boracay Island, overhead transmission lines, a cable terminal station, a new Boracay Substation, and an upgraded Nabas Substation.

The project was certified as an “Energy Project of National Significance” by the Department of Energy (DOE) back in 2019 with an Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC)- approved cost of P5.48 billion.

Labrada said the current transmission line could still handle the area's increasing power demand, which was approaching the maximum capacity of 27 megawatts.

Consumption was at 37 megawatts prior to the coronavirus pandemic. This reduced the demand for electricity but delayed the undertaking of the transmission project.

Boracay and Caticlan developments cannot be accommodated in the absence of transmission reinforcements. Boracay and Caticlan's projected demand is 102 megawatts (MW) by 2030 and 175 MW by 2040.

“The Nabas-Caticlan-Boracay transmission line project will support the increasing power requirements of the island and ensure stable and reliable transmission of power,” Business Mirror quoted the NGCP
“[We] will support the island’s growth and help ensure the development of Boracay as one of the world’s best travel destinations by providing the necessary energy infrastructure.”
