Dito Telecommunity has successfully interconnected its mobile network with major telecommunications providers Globe and Smart as it begins its expansion of services in Luzon.

Republic Act 7925 requires the interconnection of all authorized public telecommunications providers

IN a major step seen to place them as one of the more established telecom firms in the country, Dito Telecommunity has recently interconnected its mobile network with Globe and PLDT-Smart, the two major telecommunications providers in the country.

This meant that Dito subscribers can now send text messages and make calls to users of PLDT-Smart Communications and Globe Telecom.

Globe’s general counsel, Froilan Castelo, announced that this move is a reflection of Globe’s commitment to “fair and healthy competition” in the telecommunications industry.

It also plans to continue abiding by the rules and regulations on competition and telecom laws and will be working towards interconnecting its landline services with Dito.

Republic Act 7925 requires the interconnection of all authorized public telecommunications providers.

Dito Telecommunity, owned by Davao-based businessman Dennis A. Uy and China Telecom, officially launched on March 8 in Visayas and Mindanao, with coverage expanded to parts of Luzon this month.

It also introduced its services to provinces in Luzon such as Malvar, Tanauan, Lipa City, and Santo Tomas in Batangas, Silang and Tagaytay City in Cavite, Los Banos and Calamba in Laguna, Baliuag in Bulacan, and other parts of Nueva Ecija and Tarlac.

Dito committed to a five-year time frame of providing network coverage to 84 percent of the country’s population. It also offered a minimum average internet speed of 55 mbps.

The company has a long way to go before it can uphold its commitment, as recently, their launch brought to light some limitations such as SIM card incompatibility.

Currently, only a limited number of cell phones are compatible with the network’s services.

Dito’s Chief Technology Officer Rodolfo Santiago clarified that those not on Dito’s short list may still work with their network, however they cannot guarantee that they would not experience any technical issues as these models were not tested for network compatibility.

Dito’s goal of providing network coverage to 84 percent of Filipinos is looking slim as of the moment, especially since their SIM cards run on 4G or 5G systems.

Given that they launched in the countryside where most Filipinos do not use smartphones, there is already a gap that needs to be addressed. (MO)
