The eight-car trainset is part of the 13 train sets acquired by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) for the PNR Clark Phase 1 which will run from Malolos, Bulacan to Tutuban in Manila.

The first train set of the North-South Commuter Line (NSCR) expected in December arrived early at the Port of Manila on Sunday, (November 21), from Japan Transport Engineering Company at Sumitomo Corporation.

The eight-car trainset is part of the 13 train sets acquired by the Department of Transportation (DOTr) for the PNR Clark Phase 1 which will run from Malolos, Bulacan to Tutuban in Manila.

Before shipment, the trains underwent factory acceptance testing (FAT) in Japan to ensure that it meets its “intended purpose” and complies with international standards.

“The FATs shall also ensure that the rolling stock’s equipment is correctly and fully functioning, prior to shipment of the trains,” the DOTr said.

In the latest update from the agency, the trains are undergoing custom clearances. Once cleared, the trainsets will be taken to PNR’s Depot in Malanday, Valenzuela before the year ends.

DOTr expects a second shipment of train sets in the second quarter of next year.

Once completed, the PNR Clark Phase 1 will be capable of transporting around 300,000 passengers daily with a travel time of 35 minutes as compared to the then one hour and 30 minutes.

The NSCR is a 148-kilometer rail transit system running from New Clark City in Capas, Tarlac to Calamba, Laguna, spanning 36 stations.

DOTr first entered the P12.1-billion joint venture with Japan Transport Engineering Co. and Sumitomo Corp. in 2019 to manufacture and deliver a rolling stock fleet of 13 train sets—eight cars per set— for a total of 104 cars.
