SAN JOSE, Antique — The construction of a P15 million farm-to-market road (FMR) marks a significant milestone for local agriculture and the community at large. Starting this week, this one-kilometer road from Sitio Suong to Barangay Pantao Proper, funded by the Department of Agriculture, promises to be a game-changer for local farmers.

Municipal agriculture officer Lucia Bantolo highlighted the project's potential, emphasizing how it will simplify the journey for farmers transporting their produce.

Currently, farmers face rough terrain and long waits for transportation, making it a struggle to bring their mongo, banana, and sugarcane to market.

Power of Unity

The new road will transform this arduous process into a straightforward journey, saving time and reducing costs.

The impact of this road cannot be overstated. Easier access to markets means fresher produce, reduced spoilage, and better prices for farmers.

It also encourages greater agricultural productivity, as farmers are more likely to invest in their crops when they know they can reliably and efficiently get them to market.

This boost in agricultural activity can have a ripple effect, enhancing food security and driving local economic growth.

The community spirit evident in this project is commendable. Fifteen lot owners generously donated portions of their farmland to make way for the road.

Their contributions are a testament to the collective effort and shared vision for a more prosperous future. This collaboration between the government and local residents showcases the power of unity in achieving common goals.

Proactive Support

Moreover, the local government's proactive support for farmers is evident in their recent financial assistance to those affected by El Niño.

On June 14, 442 farmers received P3,000 each, providing them with much-needed relief to purchase fertilizers and other necessities. This support underscores the government's commitment to sustaining agricultural livelihoods in the face of climatic challenges.

However, while the road construction is a significant step forward, it is crucial to ensure its maintenance and longevity. Infrastructure projects often falter without proper upkeep, turning initial investments into wasted resources.

Continuous support and periodic maintenance of the road will be essential to maximize its benefits.
