From providing free school uniforms and supplies for San Pedrense students, San Pedro City, Laguna Mayor Art Mercado is ready to level up in his administration’s quest to make education one of the “top” sectors in the city.

Last Tuesday, September 10, Mercado led city officials in the groundbreaking ceremony for two high-priority schoolbuilding projects in San Pedro City.

These consist of a four-storey, 16-classroom building at the Langgam Elementary School in Barangay Langgam, as well as a four-storey eight-classroom building at the San Isidro Bayan-Bayanan Elementary School in Sitio Bayan-Bayanan, Barangay San Vicente.

Mercado said he hopes the new school buildings will benefit San Pedrense students, particularly in the Upper Villages where a growing population has resulted in a significant shortage of classrooms and other facilities.

“These new classrooms will provide a better learning environment for our students, ensuring they have the space and resources they need to thrive,” the city mayor said in a social media message.

“Alam kong marami pang-classrooms ang kailangan, kaya lalo pa naming pag-iigihan. Para sa ating mga kabataan, we'll do our best para sa inyong pag-aaral, kaya mag-aral mabuti,” he added.

Additional support for teachers, students

As San Pedro City joins the country in the celebration of National Teachers’ Month, the city government under Mercado pledged to continue supporting the city’s education sector, benefitting teachers and students alike.

From September 9 to 13, the city government finally opened the submission of requirements for San Pedrense students who wish to avail scholarships under the San Pedro City Scholarship Program (SPECS).

As of print time, city officials informed OpinYon Laguna that they have yet to release the total number of scholars for the academic year 2024-2025, pending the processing of requirements.

However, they assured us that the number of students expected to receive financial assistance under SPECS is set to increase for this school year, following an increased allotment by the city government.

"Sa ating mga scholars, pagbutihin ang pag-aaral. Alam kong hindi madali ang pag-aaral pero naniniwala ako na kakayanin ninyo. Lagi ko din sinasabi, sigurado ako sa inyo manggagaling ang susunod na leaders ng ating bayan," Mercado said.
